BT CEO's e-Club : Topic 'The Art of hedging'

Posted on 8. Nov, 2004

AS the US dollar depreciates, our business and bottomline profit (S$) continue to slide, as our sales are fixed and contracted in US dollars.

The semiconductor business sector has been projected to be slow in 2005. The weakening of the US dollar will affect it further and make it harder for companies like us to maintain profitability and remain competitive. Most semiconductor and electronics manufacturers are in located in Asia. It means there is a lot of cost pressure.

A weaker US dollar would also have an immediate impact on companies that export their products/services to the US. This would hurt domestic exports to US markets.

Singapore is highly dependent on the global economy and the global growth cycle. A slowdown by a key market player like the US would affect the domestic business environment and foreign investors' confidence. It would also increase domestic economic volatility.

For fabless chip design house ComSOC, intellectual property is a key asset. Hence, the company holds a regular innovation discussion every month, said CEO James Jeong. It also encourages fresh ideas by co-registering patents in employees name.

When it comes to generation of new concepts, the complex relationship between technology and innovation surfaces again. Technology should not be overemphasized, yet a stronger grasp of technology allow business owners to better appreciate its possibilities.

Shifting gears

Posted on 21. May, 2004

Sometimes, doing more with less is about wringing every last drop of value from your IT vendor. Or spotting the best deal from the gazillions available.

James G.J. Jeong,
CEO and president, ComSOC Technology Photography by Munshi Ahmed

Other times, it's just about knowing when to cut your losses.

This was the case for James G.J. Jeong, head honcho of high-tech chip design house ComSOC Technology, who paid S$10,000 (US$5,820) for an accounting software in 2002, then decided--just one year later--that it was inadequate for his needs.

It was an expensive lesson for the South Korea-born Jeong, but it was also a good one.
